This morning, more than 100 angry landowners and residents of Tarlton (Krugersdorp) on the West Rand gathered on the construction site of Brickvale development to raise objections to the construction of more than 6000 houses.
The landowners, who were addressed by the FF Plus leader in Gauteng, Jaco Mulder, and the FF Plus councillor for Mogale City, Amanda de Lange, gave the party a mandate to proceed to negotiate with the Gauteng government to cancel the project.
The project is so controversial because the Mogale City Council and the provincial department for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (CoGta) did not follow a public participation process and also because the site of the planned development is on unstable dolomite land.
Earlier environmental impact studies showed that the terrain is not suitable for a high-density housing scheme.
The FF Plus has already informed the Gauteng MEC for CoGta, Uhuru Moiloa, of the fact that the development is unlawful.
